Marxism or Democracy? Tom Hayden’s Letter To Hilda Solis About Honduran Elections

 

 

For those that don’t know Tom Hayden or Hilda Solis’  backgrounds:

 

First info on Tom Hayden:

A principal organizer of Students for a Democratic Society

Collaborated with North Vietnamese Communists during the Vietnam War

Organized riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago

Married Jane Fonda and organized with her a successful lobby to cut off U.S. aid to Cambodia and Vietnam

Former Democratic Assemblyman and Senator in California

Blames U.S. policies for 9/11 terrorist attacks

Among the most visible and outspoken mouthpieces of the pro-Communist camp during the Vietnam War era, in the early 1970s Hayden organized – along with his wife Jane Fonda, John Kerry, and Ted Kennedy – an “Indo-China Peace Campaign” (IPC) to cut off American aid to the regimes in Cambodia and South Vietnam. The IPC worked tirelessly to help the North Vietnamese Communists and the Khmer Rouge (led by Pol Pot) emerge victorious. Hayden and Fonda took a camera crew to Hanoi and to the “liberated” regions of South Vietnam to make a propaganda film titled Introduction to the Enemy, whose purpose was to persuade viewers that the Communists were going to create an ideal new society based on justice and equality.

Assisted by radical Democratic members of Congress, Hayden established a caucus in the Capitol, where he lectured and agitated for an end to anti-Communist efforts in South Vietnam and advocated support for the Khmer Rouge guerrillas in Cambodia.

For awhile he led a Berkeley commune called the “Red Family,” whose “Minister of Defense” trained commune members at firing ranges and instructed high-school students in the use of explosives. Hayden was also an outspoken supporter of the Black Panther Party. In 1968 Hayden was arrested as a member of the “Chicago Seven” for inciting a riot at the Democratic National Convention.

In June 2008, Solis sent a caseworker from her East Los Angeles office, Elana Henry, to represent her at a workers’ rights forum organized by Socialist International, which has close ties to the Democratic Socialists of America and bills itself as the worldwide organization of social democratic, socialist and labor parties. On a previous occasion twelve years earlier, Solis had sent another representative (Antonio Aguilar) to serve as a presenter at a major Communist Party USA event.

In 2008 Solis avidly supported Senator Hillary Clinton‘s presidential bid. When Clinton’s effort fell short, Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama aggressively sought Solis’ support in an effort to strengthen his appeal to Hispanic voters.

Letter on Honduras urges U.S. to stand firm vs. coup

The following is an open letter sent by peace and social activist Tom Hayden to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis on the situation in Honduras.

Dear Secretary Solis,

The peace, justice and labor communities no doubt are very pleased at your appointment to the commission monitoring the power-sharing arrangements and presidential elections this month in Honduras.

As one who recently interviewed President Manuel Zelaya for The Nation and has visited Honduras before, I wish to communicate a few observations.

The first is that the golpistas are unlikely to accept the latest agreement voluntarily. According to the interpretation of pro-Micheletti Wall Street Journal columnist Mary Anastasia O”Grady, it is “quite likely” that President Zelaya will be refused both the presidency and amnesty by the Honduran parliament and Supreme Court. When he steps out of the Brazilian embassy, she adds, it is “fully expected” that he will be detained. Even despite such refusals and his detention, she emphasizes, the coup government expects to receive hemispheric recognition of the elections.

It is inconceivable [to myself] that the U.S. government and the OAS would lend themselves to such a dangerous debacle. But the coup regime seems determined to preserve through high-stakes diplomacy what they think they achieved through force on June 28.

The U.S. message should be that no presidential elections will be recognized as legitimate without the return of President Zelaya to serve what remains of his term and without recognition of the new reality of a vast social movement of Hondurans demanding a real voice in the future of their country.

In your role as our Secretary of Labor, I believe you are uniquely qualified to help in the transition to a fair and more democratic Honduras. Decades of deep U.S. engagement have only left Honduras as one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere. When I was last there, I toured overflowing prisons and juvenile facilities where young people were packed 30 to a cell with only a pop bottle in which to urinate. At the American embassy, I was told that the rule of law was only a “work in progress.” There was virtually no social safety net, and thousands of young people roamed the streets, easy prey for vigilantes and mano dura advocates. One of the principle reasons that the elites moved to overthrow President Zelaya was his agenda of empowering and improving the lives of the poor, by such measures as a living wage – the same issue that you championed in California when we served in the Legislature. He pointed out in our interview that his enemies in Honduras share the same reactionary, often violent, outlook on social justice as do President Obama’s political enemies in this country.

From past collaborations on ending sweatshop labor, I know that you are aware of numerous U.S. garment manufacturers who subcontract for exploited labor in Honduras. I believe the US should adopt a new policy of lifting the hopes of the poor by enacting enforceable “sweatfree” provisions, including a living wage, on garments and other products now flowing from sweatshops to US consumers.

Two places to begin are Nike subcontractors like Hugger de Honduras and Vision Tex who have violated wage and hour laws in Honduras, leaving workers out on the streets, and Jerzees de Honduras owned by Russell/Fruit of the Loom, which recently closed a factory to crush a union. Jerzees has been the focus of a campus boycott here in the U.S.

The Honduran crisis is the focal point for new relationships between the U.S. and the continent to our south, a continent from which countless Americans like yourself have come with dreams of opportunity and memories of savage injustice. As Secretary of Labor, I pray that you will serve as a new bridge of hope between our continents.

Israeli Settlers Warned about Obama Spies

The Obama Administration has sent representatives, some open and some covert, to monitor construction in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, according to a report in Israel National News, an agency based out of the settler town of Beit El.

Shaul Goldstein, regional council head for the Eztion Bloc of settlements south of Bethlehem, said that he had met recently with an American diplomat who asked for updates on all building projects in the area. Goldstein said that he simply told the representative the truth, and added that “we have come home to build and to remain on our land.”

But long-time settler and former Knesset Member Elyakim Haetzni warned in a letter to settler leaders not to cooperate with Obama’s representatives, since any information given to them will be used to further pressure Israel.

Haetzni also blasted the American government for thinking it has the right to keep tabs on an ally in such a manner.

“It’s great chutzpah of a foreign government to openly collect information and supervise a country on that country’s own territory. We must not cooperate with this brazenness.”

News of the “Obama spies” came just as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, under tremendous US pressure, announced a 10-month settlement freeze.

“Party Crashers” Had Five-Year Relationship with Obama Before State Dinner

Judi McLeod does an investigate piece on Obama’s knowledge of the Salahi couple before the State Dinner.

While the big gun media and American Secret Service  are out there investigating “party crashers” Tareq and Michaele Salahi, no one’s telling the truth: Obama knew the Salahis when he was still an Illinois senator.

Polo Contacts Worldwide could make it easy for the investigating Secret Service by brown-enveloping them this picture:

And with Michaele Salahi yesterday having been caught out—Facebook pompoms notwithstanding—as a bogus cheerleader for the Washington Red Skins and not a model for Victoria’s Secret as claimed, Canada Free Press (CFP) leaves it to FoxNews.com to find out if she ever was a “former Miss USA”.

We do know for a fact that among the slew of memberships on charitable boards, Tareq Salahi is a former member of The American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP).  The only way to know for a fact is because even though ATFP scrubbed all references to Salahi as a board member, he can still be found on Google cache. Sad that White House Secret Service are looking like Keystone Kops in the aftermath of Obama’s very first state house dinner in the tent.

While the media is fixated on the hitch in Michaele Salahi’s git-along, there can be no doubt that these recently minted “party crashers” really get around.

We take you back to June 9, 2005 when Tom Nelson, operating officer of AARP, was summing up the Rock the Vote Awards night.  According to the Washington Post “everyone from Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama to “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson and R&B singer Mya gathered in the National Building Museum’s Great Hall:

“You were probably wondering, as you sat down at your table, ‘What the heck is the AARP doing in a Rock the Vote Event?’”  Nelson noted.

Time would soon tell that the AARP would show up in other fishy places.

And if there is anyone who must know that this weekend’s party crasher story is a crock it’s John McCain who was at the Vote Awards Night, and who along with Barack Obama, was honored with the Rock the Nation Award, Obama “for forming a multiracial coalition in winning his seat”.

McCain was handed his award for “his work on campaign finance reform”.  “Just call me Funk Master McCain,” he told the audience of 1,000 in accepting his award.: (washingtonpost.com, June 9, 2005.

Meanwhile, don’t know why Obama’s long time associates possibly could be mistaken for party crashers when they came into the tent with a Bravo Reality TV Show “Real Housewives of DC” professional camera crew and makeup artist in tow unless he was hoping for a Reality gig for wife Michelle, CBS celebrity Katie Couric or Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Obama could end the “party crasher” goose chase for White House Secret Service in a proverbial New York Minute by coming clean on his almost 5-year-old social/political relationship with Tareq and Michaele Salahi.

WaPo News Blackout on Chavez-Abbas Love Fest: “We’re All On The Same Path”~~Abbas

Leo Rennert’s article should be an eye-opener to all Americans.

On Friday, Nov. 27, Mahmoud Abbas turned up at the presidential palace in Caracas where he lined up his strategic interests with those of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

The radical, American-hating Chavez warmly embraced Abbas and congratulated him on the “Palestinian fight against Yankee imperialism and the genocidal state of Israel,which attempts to exterminate the Palestinian people.”

 

In return, Abbas warmly thanked Chavez for his support and told him:  “We’re all on the same path.”  To seal their deep friendship, Chavez awarded Abbas a major Venezuelan decoration.  The Associated Press duly reported their encounter.  A wirephoto showing Chavez decorating Abbas also was flashed across the world.

 

Yet, the Washington Post’s Nov. 28 edition fails to carry a single word about Abbas traveling all the way to South America to cement close ties with a radical dictator who only a few hours earlier played host to Iranian President Ahmadinejad — another Chavez occasion for demonizing Israel with poisonous rhetoric.

 

It’s not as if the Abbas-Chavez mutual-admiration society wasn’t news.  Quite the opposite.  It was most newsworthy precisely because Abbas has been lavishly praised by both the Obama administration and the Washington Post as a “moderate” and a genuine peace partner, with whom Israel and the West could do business to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and achieve Palestinian statehood.

 

So, how does Abbas’s detour to Caracas comport with the trust accorded him by the White House and the Washington Post that he can be relied upon to negotiate a two-state deal in good faith?

 

Did the Post query the White House and the State Department on their response to Abbas climbing into Chavez’s anti-Washington orbit?  Apparently not. 

 

During his meeting with Chavez, Abbas had the chutzpah to declare that he’s ready for a peace based on the U.S.-backed “road map.”  Yet, the “road map,” for starters, obligates Abbas to end all incitement against Israel.  What more venomous anti-Israel incitement is there than the Palestinian leader, after Chavez’s call for jihad against the Jewish state, telling his Venezuelan host:  “We’re all on the same path”?

 

The Post has published scores of articles sharply critical of Israel for not complying with its obligation under the “road map” to freeze settlement activity, yet, Abbas in Caracas blatantly violated his obligation under the “road map” to cease all anti-Israel incitement when he endorsed Chavez’s vicious attack on the Jewish state and welcomed his support as an ally in the Palestinian cause.

 

Did the Post ask the White House and the State Department how the administration’s squares its support of Abbas with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars, while he violates the “road map” in Caracas’s presidential palace and makes nice with the leading anti-American rabble-rouser in the Western hemisphere?  Apparently not.

 

It’s not as if the Post were without a South American correspondent to cover the chummy Abbas-Chavez summit.  On Nov. 28, the paper ran a lengthy article by correspondent Juan Forero on Ahmadinjead’s forays into South America, including his meeting with Chavez just before Abbas arrived at the presidential palace in Caracas.  Yet, Forero’s article makes no mention whatsoever of the Abbas-Chavez encounter on the heels of the Chavez-Ahmadinejad get-together.

 

Was this news blackout about Abbas yet another favor bestowed by the Post to protect and burnish the phony image of Abbas as a trustworthy “moderate” — never mind his revolting political theater performance in Caracas?

 

Whatever the reason, the Post dropped the ball — big-time — and reinforced its reputation as an anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian organ with no regard for responsible, fair, even-handed journalism.

The Obama Administration’s Pre-Amnesty Amnesty. Is This Where Illegals Will Be Made Legal to Gain Healthcare? (12 to 14 MILLION)

The Obama Administration’s Pre-Amnesty Amnesty

By Ronald W. Mortensen, November 25, 2009

According to Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, the Obama administration will insist on a path to citizenship for illegal aliens when it pushes for comprehensive immigration reform in 2010.

Just like the Bush administration, the Obama administration’s legislation will grant illegal aliens amnesty from serious job-related felonies including document fraud, perjury on I-9 forms and even identity theft. This is necessary because virtually all illegal aliens who work in the United States are committing these crimes.

In anticipation of the forthcoming amnesty debate, the Obama administration is doing everything possible to show that it is taking strong action against employers. At the same time it is quietly ensuring that illegal aliens who lose their jobs are allowed to remain in the United States rather than being prosecuted and/or deported for the job-related felonies that they are committing.

The result of this pre-amnesty amnesty policy can be seen in the dramatic decline in the arrests of illegal alien workers. According to the Washington Times, criminal arrests, administrative arrests, indictments and convictions of illegal immigrants at work sites all fell by more than 50 percent from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2009.

During the past several months, ICE has identified over 3,000 illegal aliens working for just two companies — American Apparel and ABM Industries. In both cases, the illegal aliens had their employment terminated because ICE compelled the companies to fire people who could not prove that they were legally in the United States. However, ICE did not take into custody the illegal aliens who had fraudulent documents, who had perjured themselves on I-9 forms, and who were using Social Security numbers belonging to American citizens. Rather, they granted them effective amnesty from prosecution as well as amnesty from deportation, thereby leaving 3,000 illegal aliens free to continue committing felonies in order to get replacement jobs.

In addition to ending virtually all arrests, prosecutions, and deportations of illegal aliens resulting from workplace actions, the Obama administration has restricted state and local law enforcement’s ability under the 287(g) program to help immigration authorities identify and remove illegal aliens who commit crimes or otherwise pose a threat to American citizens. Once again, the administration is doing everything possible to ensure that illegal aliens are free to stay in the United States until comprehensive immigration reform and its amnesty provisions are passed.

These restrictions were necessary because the 287(g) program was simply too effective in identifying and removing illegal aliens from the United States as evidenced by a recent CIS study by Jessica Vaughan and James R. Edwards Jr. This study revealed that state and local law enforcement agencies with 287(g) authority:

• lodged immigration charges on more than 81,000 illegal or criminal aliens between January 2006 and November 2008, according to data provided by ICE.
• reduced local crime rates, lowered inmate populations, and cut criminal justice costs.
• saved taxpayer money because 287(g) is less expensive than other criminal alien identification programs such as Secure Communities and Fugitive Operations. For example, in 2008 ICE spent $219 million to remove 34,000 fugitive aliens (mostly criminals). In 2008, ICE was given $40 million for 287(g), which produced more than 45,000 arrests of aliens who were involved in state and local crimes.

Thus, the Obama administration is sending a loud and clear message to millions of illegal aliens:

You can continue to live and work in the United States.

You can continue to commit employment-related felonies in order to steal jobs from American citizens without fear of arrest or deportation.

You can continue to destroy the credit records of millions of American children whose identifying information you are using.

You can continue to saddle Americans whose Social Security numbers you are using with arrest records, corrupted medical records, and even with income tax liabilities for income you earned but did not pay taxes on.

If you drive without a license, without auto insurance, or under the influence of alcohol, it will not jeopardize your ability to stay in the United States and you can be assured that you will be granted amnesty from all job-related crimes that you have committed once we pass comprehensive immigration reform.

At the same time, the Obama administration is telling American citizens and legal residents:

President Obama’s new anti-Semitism czar serves on the board of a controversial Israel-lobby group accused of working against the Jewish state, while her writings suggest Israel’s policies are to blame for anti-Semitism.Hannah Rosenthal, a former Health Department regional director under the Clinton administration, started her position earlier this week as the State Department’s new special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism. She previously headed the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, an umbrella U.S. Jewish organization.

Rosenthal, however, serves on the board of J Street, a lobby group that is mostly led by left-leaning Israelis and that receives funds from Arab and Muslim Americans.

Even the Israeli government has been distancing itself from J Street, with its ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, refusing to attend its annual dinner last month. She was on the board of one of the leading carbon offset trading companies, APX.

That makes for one really big conflict of interest in her role guiding the administration’s efforts to regulate carbon dioxide and force emitters to buy CO2 ration-coupons.

So, add this to her work for the Albright Group which is “secretive about its clients” (SourceWatch), violating a federal judge’s order to preserve documents by wiping computers clean while at EPA (sound at all relevant these days?), and her board membership for the Socialist International’s “climate” project.

Other than those I can’t think of too many reasons Obama wouldn’t want her subjected to disclosure requirements and scrutiny.

Justice Department Says Acorn Can Be Paid for Pre-Ban Contracts

November 27, 2009

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has concluded that the Obama administration can lawfully pay the community group Acorn for services provided under contracts signed before Congress banned the government from providing money to the group.

The department’s conclusion, laid out in a recently disclosed five-page memorandum from David Barron, the acting assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel, adds a new wrinkle to a sharp political debate over the antipoverty group’s activities and recent efforts to distance the government from it.

Since 1994, Acorn, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has received about $53 million in federal aid, much of it grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for providing various services related to affordable housing.

But the group has become a prime target for conservative critics, and on Oct. 1, President Obama signed into law a spending bill that included a provision that said no taxpayer money — including money authorized by previous legislation — could be “provided to” the group or its affiliates.

A Housing and Urban Development Department lawyer asked the Justice Department whether the new law meant that pre-existing contracts with Acorn should be broken. And in a memorandum signed Oct. 23 and posted online this week, Mr. Barron said the government should continue to make payments to Acorn as required by such contracts.

The new law “should not be read as directing or authorizing HUD to breach a pre-existing binding contractual obligation to make payments to Acorn or its affiliates, subsidiaries or allied organizations where doing so would give rise to contractual liability,” Mr. Barron wrote.

The deputy director of national operations for Acorn, Brian Kettenring, praised Mr. Barron’s decision.

“We are pleased that commitments will be honored relative to Acorn’s work to help keep America’s working families facing foreclosure in their homes,” Mr. Kettenring said.

Mr. Barron said he had based his conclusion on the statute’s phrase “provided to.” This phrase, he said, has no clearly defined meaning in the realm of government spending — unlike words like “obligate” and “expend.”

Citing dictionary and thesaurus entries, he said “provided to” could be interpreted as meaning only instances in which an official was making “discretionary choices” about whether to give the group money, rather than instances in which the transfer of money to Acorn was required to satisfy contractual obligations.

Since there are two possible ways to construe the term “provided to,” Mr. Barron wrote, it makes sense to pick the interpretation that allows the government to avoid breaching contracts.

Moreover, he argued, requiring the government to cancel contracts with a specifically named entity — “including even in cases where performance has already been completed but payment has not been rendered” — would raise constitutional concerns best avoided by interpreting the law differently.

The Constitution prohibits “bills of attainder” — legislation intended to punish specific people or groups. Acorn has filed a lawsuit arguing that the statute banning the government from providing it money amounts to a bill of attainder.

Founded in Arkansas in 1970, Acorn describes itself as the nation’s largest grass-roots community organizing group. It provides financial services to poor and middle-income families, conducts voter registration drives, and advocates for higher minimum wages and more affordable housing.

Conservatives have long complained about Acorn’s voter drives in poor neighborhoods, citing instances in which workers fraudulently registered imaginary voters like Mickey Mouse. Acorn has argued that it is the real victim of such incidents, which its employees have often brought to the attention of the authorities.

Criticism of Acorn escalated in September, when two conservative activists released videos they had recorded using secret cameras of Acorn workers in several cities. The activists had posed as a pimp and a prostitute seeking financial advice. Instead of raising objections, the Acorn employees counseled the couple on how to hide their illicit activities and avoid paying taxes.
