Alice Palmer

Alice Palmer is a Chicago based academic, socialist activist and former friend, employer and political ally of Barack Obama. She employed Obama, as her Chief of Staff, during her failed run for Congress in the mid 1990s. She introduced Obama to people of influence in Chicago, before he “took over” her Illinois State Senate seat.

It was Alice Palmer who took Obama to the famous meeting in the Hyde Park home of former Weather Underground terrorist leaders Bill Ayers, and Bernardine Dohrn, where Obama launched his political career.

Alice Palmer and her husband Buzz Palmer established the Black Press Institute in Chicago circa 1982. In a 1986 interview with the Communist Party USA paper People’s Daily World, Alice Palmer explained BPI’s role in influencing decision makers such as the Congressional Black Caucus. The organization was an outlet for communist propaganda.

Its publication carried articles such as “Socialism is the Only Way Forward” and “Is Black Bourgeoise Ideology Enough?”

In 1983 Alice Palmer traveled to Czechoslovakia to the Soviet front World Peace Council‘s Prague Assembly.

At the time, Alice Palmer was a an Executive Board member of the Communist Party USA-dominated U.S. Peace Council.

Of the 48 U.S. Peace Council officers in 1983-1985, at least ten; Sara Staggs, Rob Prince,Michael Myerson, Frank Chapman, Otis Cunningham, James Jackson, Atiba Mbiwan, Pauline Rosen, Jose Soler and Denise Young were known Communist Party USA members.

A further eight, were involved in the 1990s, in a Communist Party splinter group Committees of Correspondence. They were Gus Newport, Mark Solomon, Linda Coronado, Barbara Lee, Kevin Lynch, Anne Mitchell, Arlene Prigoff and Alice Palmer herself.

The trip was organized by International Organization of Journalists executive Don Rojas, the American educated former press secretary to Grenada’s late communist leader Maurice Bishop, in conjunction with the Black Press Institute, the National Alliance of Black Journalists and the National Newspaper Publishers Association-the US’s largest organization of owners of black newspapers.

The trip was extraordinary because we were able to sit down with our counterparts and with the seats of power in three major capitals-Prague, Berlin and Moscow. We visited with foreign ministers, we talked with the editors of the major newspapers in these three cities…

It was a very unusual trip because we were given access…Every effort was made to give us as much as we asked for…We came back feeling that we could speak very well about the interest of the socialist countries in promoting peace.

In Czechoslovakia, Alice Palmer and other delegates officials at the Czech Foreign Ministry, including Dr. Vladimir Polachek, head of the Department of Basic Political Questions and Dr.Rudolf Jabubik, Deputy head of the 6th Territorial Department (including the US).

In March 1986 Alice Palmer covered the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Congress in Moscow for the Black Press Institute.

Palmer, as editor of the Black Press Review was elected International Organization of Journalists vice president for North America at the organization’s 10th Congress, October 20-23 1986, in Prague Czechoslovakia. She also traveled to the Soviet Union and Bulgaria during the same trip.

The IOJ was a Soviet front operation, based in Prague until its expulsion by the Czech government in 1995.

In a People’s Weekly World interview with Chicago Communist Party USA member Mike Giocondo, Alice Palmer explained the International Organization of Journalists‘ concept of media “fairness”.

Giocondo What is the IOJ’s approach to the question of fairness in the media? How does it relate to the concept of “objective journalism” which is stressed here in the US?

Palmer The IOJ believes that there must be fairness in media, which is called for in a proposal for a New Information Order, which the IOJ supports. Fairness is not an abstraction, because journalists are not abstractions; we live in a world, we live in our particular societies, and therefore are caught up in whatever the dynamics of the situation are. This concept of “Objective journalism” that is taught in journalism schools…is not possible…What we are striving for is fairness and balance of information.

During her time as International Organization of Journalists vice president, Alice Palmer worked with highest levels of the Soviet propaganda machine-with the Soviet journal Izvestia, with Romesh Chandra and the World Peace Council and IOJ leaders such as Kaarle Nordenstreng and Jiri Kubka.

Alice Palmer was effectively, a Soviet “Agent of Influence”.

On June 6, 1991, Palmer, a Democrat, replaced state senator Richard Newhouse as the representative for Illinois’ 13th Legislative District, a post she would hold until January 1997.

In the mid-1990s, state senator Palmer attended a number of political meetings at the Chicago-area home of her friends and ideological allies, former Weather Underground terrorists Bill Ayers and his wife Bernardine Dohrn. At those gatherings, Palmer developed a friendly relationship with another attendee, a young aspiring politician named Barack Obama.

As late as 1994, Palmer was known to be working closely with members of the Committees of Correspondence, a Communist Party USA splinter group.

In 1995, Palmer decided to pursue an opportunity to run for a higher political office when Mel Reynolds, the congressman from Illinois’ 2nd District, resigned from the House of Representatives amid scandal.

As Palmer prepared to leave the state senate, she hand-picked Barack Obama as the person she most wanted to fill her newly vacated senate seat. Toward that end, she introduced Obama to party elders and donors as her preferred successor, and helped him gather the signatures required for getting his name placed on the ballot.

But in November 1995, Jesse Jackson, Jr. defeated Palmer in a special election for Reynolds’ empty congressional seat. At that point, Palmer filed to retain the Democratic nomination for the state senate seat she had encouraged Obama to pursue; that seat would be up for grabs in the November 1996 elections. She asked Obama to politely withdraw from the race and offered to help him find an alternative position elsewhere.

But Obama refused to withdraw, so Palmer resolved to run against him (and against two other opponents who also had declared their candidacy) in the 1996 Democratic primary. To get her name placed on the ballot, Palmer hastily gathered the minimum number of signatures required. Obama promptly challenged the legitimacy of those signatures and charged Palmer with fraud. A subsequent investigation found that a number of the names on Palmer’s signature list were technically invalid, thus she was knocked off the ballot. (Names could be eliminated from a candidate’s petition for a variety of reasons. For example, if a name was printed rather than written in cursive script, it was considered invalid. Or if the person collecting the signatures was not registered to perform that task, any signatures that he or she had collected likewise were nullified.)

Obama also successfully challenged the signatures gathered by his other two opponents, and both of them were disqualified as well. As a result, Obama ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and won by default.

“I liked Alice Palmer a lot,” Obama would later reflect. “I thought she was a good public servant. It [the process by which Obama got Palmer's name removed from the ballot] was very awkward. That part of it I wish had played out entirely differently.”

The Stasi IRS?

It’s often been said the Internal Revenue Service is the most feared bureaucracy in the United States.

Little wonder.

As the agency openly proclaims on their own website, concerning what actions they might take if your taxes are unpaid:

We could seize and sell property that you hold (such as your car, boat, or house), or we could levy property that is yours but is held by someone else (such as your wages, retirement accounts, dividends, bank accounts, licenses, rental income, accounts receivables, the cash loan value of your life insurance, or commissions).

You could even wind up in jail like Al Capone, who found that not paying taxes brought down more wrath and judgment from the government than murder.

But recent events have given Americans even more reason for fear.

Deep in the subterranean bowels of the IRS, there are electronic folders full of deeply personal, private information about nearly every American and every tax exempt organization. We now know this treasure trove of information is exponentially expanding and has been put to the use for the aims of a corrupt administration interested in crippling political opposition such as the Tea Party movement.

The harassment of the Richmond Tea Party group, which applied for tax exempt status, exemplifies the badgering many conservative groups have received over the last few years. A long letter from the IRS to the organization includes an almost impossible list of requirements demanded by lackeys who obviously invented as many obstacles as possible to prevent conservative organizations from achieving tax exempt status.

In the letter, the IRS admitted the group had already provided “thorough responses” in its 2009 application, but stated that “unfortunately, we need the following for the period of 2010 to now…” Among the plethora of demands for information from October 2010 on:

● Detailed information about board members, officers, employees and volunteers, including work hours and compensation.

● Information on all events and programs on all events and programs, including time, location; detailed description plus hard copies of all handouts; detailed lists of the names and credentials of all organizers, the contents of all speeches, the names of all speakers and info on their credentials.

● Provision of information on all publishing activities, including books, CD’s, DVD’s, newsletters, flyers, brochures, pamphlets, voter guides — plus copies of all publications and advertising materials.

● Information on any and all attempts to influence the outcome of specific legislation, including information on all attempts to do so.

● Information of all other IRC 501© (3) or 527 organizations with whom the Tea Party is associated, including details about the “nature of the relationship,” along with the names and employer ID numbers of the leaders of such organizations.

Other demands included the provision of details about future activities being planned. The IRS also wanted all the names of “donors, contributors and grantors.” If the donors, contributors and grantors planned to run for office, the Tea Party was to provide such information, including the title of the office for which the aforementioned people might be running.

In short, the Richmond Tea Party was basically asked to act as a spy on itself and other similarly minded organizations on behalf of the IRS. It was asked to give every possible detail not only about its private inner mechanisms and modes of operation, but those of any organization with which it is even remotely connected. It goes without saying that such detailed information could be conveniently put to use by political enemies.

Obtaining access to files would be all that was needed to know everything about a prospective candidate for office who just happened to be conservative.

Where have we seen this sort of intensive scrutiny and record keeping before? Where have we seen the use of detailed records used to repress opposition to government?

We saw it in Eastern Germany before the fall of the infamous Wall in 1989 in the form of the Stasi, the arm of the secret police, which kept voluminous information on every individual and every organization within that hapless and oppressed nation. The Stasi’s motto was “To know everything.” At its height of power, it employed 100,000 and had 200,000 informants. (According to its website, the IRS has about 115,000 employees.)

The result of the continual spying in the GDR was a collection of information so huge that it defied belief. Der Spiegel, Germany’s top newspaper, reported in 2009, “The files occupy over 100 kilometers of shelf space, though this doesn’t even include the 16,000 sacks of shredded documents the Birthler Authority is currently trying to reassemble with the aid of computers.”

Included in the files, later opened to scrutiny of the citizens the Stasi harassed, arrested, tortured and whose relatives were killed, are horrifying examples of how little it took to destroy lives. “Mundane everyday events were picked up by the Stasi and used to change the course of people’s lives. Some ‘suspicious activities’ were nothing more than simple misunderstandings: One file tells of a man subjected to close surveillance at the Leipzig convention hall because the agent monitoring him didn’t understand what he meant by checking his ‘mail box.’ The official was unaware of the English term and reported it as ‘Mehl box’ — a box of flour.” The poor stooge was arrested.

Herbert Ziehm, who formerly lived in East Germany and who was appointed to be in charge of managing the Stasi files, relates the files are testament to a darker side of humanity. Ziehm says that films like The Lives of Others, an award-winning film revelatory of the human consequences of Stasi activities, does not even come close to plumbing the depths to which human beings can sink when they are encouraged to spy on one another. Ziehm said, “More often than not, the Stasi did not need to apply pressure at all. In fact, many often felt snubbed if their information was deemed to be of no interest. People informed for personal gain, out of loyalty to the East German regime, or simply because they wanted to feel like they had some power.”

Where else has the Stasi mentality been found?

In his massive study of the oppression of the Soviet communist regime, The Gulag Archipelago, Alexander Solzhenitsyn documented the results of a vast bureaucracy dedicated to spying on fellow Russians. He wrote: “Any action directed toward the weakening of state power was considered to be counterrevolutionary.”

He cited the results of the communists’ criminal code which forbade “propaganda or agitation containing an appeal for the overthrow, subverting, or weakening of Soviet power… and, equally, the dissemination or possession of literary materials of similar content [...] The famous extensions of this section were as follows: The scope of ‘agitation containing an appeal’ was enlarged to include a face-to-face conversation between friends or even between husband and wife, or a private letter. The word ‘appeal’ could mean personal advice. And we say ‘could mean’ because, in fact it did [...] The term ‘preparation of literary materials’ covered every letter, note, or private diary, even when only the original document existed. [...] I myself experienced the subtle application of this section. Two of us had secretly exchanged thoughts — in other words, we were the beginnings of an organization, in other words, an organization.”

The result of the exchange of letters between Solzhenitsyn and his friend was that Alexander was sent to the gulag. A group of photos of him during and after imprisonment can be found here. His ravaged face tells it all.

Solzhenitsyn’s story as well as the stories of millions of East Germans and Russians who were entrapped by the machinations of a faceless, remorseless, and oppressive bureaucracy dedicated to spying on and persecuting fellow citizens is a solemn warning to us.

Yesterday, the founder of one of the conservative groups targeted by the IRS brought up his concerns regarding if the agency could be trusted to handle health care information under Obamacare if it is known already to disclose information that it wasn’t legally allowed.

At the same time, the IRS is already being presented with a case from a company that claims it stole more than 60 million medical records of more than 10 million Americans.

The complaint filed by John Doe Company against 15 John Doe IRS agents (this is how the plaintiff and defendants are identified) states that these records could include those of every California state judge, state court employees, members of the Screen Actor’s Guild and the Directors Guild, and “prominent citizens in the world of entertainment, business and government, from all walks of life.”

Court House News reported that the records were obtained while the IRS was investigating a tax matter with a warrant for a former employee of the company. The warrant authorized the IRS to obtain financial records of the employee in question, “not seizure of any health care or medical record of any persons, least of all third parties completely unrelated to the matter.”

“[...] none of the 10,000,000 Americans were under any kind of known criminal or civil investigation and their medical records had no relevance whatsoever to the IRS search,” the complaint stated. The amount of records seized in March 2011 is “roughly one out of every twenty-five adult American citizens.”

IRS Scandal: The Union Connection

Jeffrey Lord of the American Spectator has done us a great favor by investigating the left wing union that represents IRS and other Treasury employees – 150,000 of them in 31 separate government agencies including the IRS. The union has signed on to the left wing agenda, and has funneled 94% of its political contributions in 2012 to Democrats.

The report is long and informative, and should be read in its entirety. Some key excerpts:

If you are working in the IRS, and you are an NTEU member, and you know your union leadership is funneling your union dues to anti-Tea Party candidates, and your union has so much raw power within the IRS that they even control whether you, an IRS employee, can get even such mundane tech gear as a Blackberry – what attitude are you going to display as you review Tea Party applications that must, by law, come in to the IRS for approval?

You already know what to do. And inside the IRS, that’s exactly what was done. The Tea Party, in the vernacular, was screwed. By IRS bureaucrats whose union money is being used to attack the Tea Party. Of course these IRS employees know what to do – most probably without even being asked. There is no need to ask. And if they don’t follow the union program – and want a Blackberry – tough luck.

The union power, in the hands of committed leftists, is substantial:

The President of the NTEU – a union that has gone out of its way to use IRS employee money to defeat the Tea Party - has a “vital role in recommending raises for most federal employees” – which includes, of course, IRS employees.

And the best is yet to come (if you are a committed leftist):

With the IRS assuming serious police powers of Obamacare, in effect the members of one left-wing labor union will have access to the private health care records of every single American.

If Americans depend in the IRS to be fair and neutral, then the unionization of employees and the confiscation of part of their paychecks to fund union dues laundered into contributions to the Democrats is very problematic.  Left wingers love to discuss “root causes” when it comes to excusing criminality and social pathology. Well, let’s apply that same analytical framework to the IRS. OIt is clear at this moment that permitting federal employees to unionize was a huge blunder. Even FDR understood that.

Is Obama’s Response to the Blistering Benghazi Update a New Executive Order?

Earlier today Fox News broke out an update on the events that transpired in and around Benghazi on September 11, 2012. In that update came information that the White House administration knew what was happening on the ground, in real time. Perhaps the most damning information is that help was requested three (3) times and that there was military capable of helping Ambassador Chris Stevens, Information Specialist Sean Smith, former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, and former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty (who flew in from Tripoli to lend aid), but all requests were denied and those offering help were told to “stand down”.

Given the immediate attention to the breaking news throughout the day today, and as is par for Washington when they do not wish to have an immediate response of their actions given, the White House issued a new executive order around 4:00 pm ET.

In that update came information that the White House administration knew what was happening on the ground, in real time. Perhaps the most damning information is that help was requested three (3) times and that there was military capable of helping Ambassador Chris Stevens, Information Specialist Sean Smith, former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, and former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty (who flew in from Tripoli to lend aid), but all requests were denied and those offering help were told to “stand down”.

Given the immediate attention to the breaking news throughout the day today, and as is par for Washington when they do not wish to have an immediate response of their actions given, the White House issued a new executive order around 4:00 pm ET.

The Washington Examiner’s Michal Conger reports:

Conservative groups seeking information from the Environmental Protection Agency have been routinely hindered by fees normally waived for media and watchdog groups, while fees for more than 90 percent of requests from green groups were waived, according to requests reviewed by the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

CEI reviewed Freedom of Information Act requests sent between January 2012 and this spring from several environmental groups friendly to the EPA’s mission, and several conservative groups, to see how equally the agency applies its fee waiver policy for media and watchdog groups. Government agencies are supposed to waive fees for groups disseminating information for public benefit.

“This is as clear an example of disparate treatment as the IRS’ hurdles selectively imposed upon groups with names ominously reflecting an interest in, say, a less intrusive or biased federal government,” said CEI fellow Chris Horner.

Most green groups, including EarthJustice, The Waterkeeper Alliance, and Greenpeace, saw their fees waived. In fact, according to the report, 92 percent of requests from green groups were waived by the EPA.

But of the requests that were denied, “the EPA said the group either didn’t respond to requests for justification of a waiver, or didn’t express intent to disseminate the information to the general public,” Conger reports, citing documents obtained by the Examiner.

And here’s where things could become a headache for the Obama administration:

CEI, on the other hand, had its requests denied 93 percent of the time. One request was denied because CEI failed to express its intent to disseminate the information to the general public. The rest were denied because the agency said CEI “failed to demonstrate that the release of the information requested significantly increases the public understanding of government operations or activities.”
Similarly, requests from conservative groups Judicial Watch and National Center for Public Policy Research were approved half the time, and all requests from Franklin Center and the Institute for Energy Research were denied.
“Their practice is to take care of their friends and impose ridiculous obstacles to deny problematic parties’ requests for information,” said Horner.

“This is a clear pattern of favoritism for allied groups and a concerted campaign to make life more difficult for those deemed unfriendly,” he said, adding that he thinks the EPA is stonewalling CEI because it’s one of the few groups that tries to keep the fed agency accountable.

“The left hand of big government reaches out to give a boost to its far-left hand at every turn. Argue against more of the same, however, and prepare to be treated as if you have fewer rights.”

You knew the mainstream media was biased, but this is incredible. It was revealed today that CBS News President David Rhodes’ brother is Obama Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes, who was instrumental in rewriting the Benghazi talking points. But it gets worse. It is now learned that ABC President Ben Sherwood’s sister, Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, is a Special Assistant to Barack Obama on national security affairs. But even this isn’t it! CNN’s deputy bureau chief, Virginia Moseley, is the wife of Tom Nides, who until February was Hillary Clinton’s deputy.

Ben Rhodes is a top NSC advisor with absolutely no foreign policy or military experience. None! This idiot has advocated intervention both in Libya and now Syria. How has that worked out for us? He is responsible for helping to massage the Benghazi talking points to watered down drivel. His greatest accomplishment appears to be a Master’s Degree in fiction writing received from New York University. So perhaps we should call him Obama’s fiction writer!

In what may be a belated effort to salvage its reputation, or perhaps an effort to get the best scoop now that keeping quiet is out of the question, ABC published a story revealing that there were twelve revisions of the Benghazi memo. The final version eradicated all references to terrorists and al Qaeda. Nice work, Mr. Fiction Writer!

…The only mainstream media reporter really doing her job is CBS’s Sharyl Attkison. Attkison has also done a heroic job on the Fast N’ Furious Eric Holder gun running scandal. Now it appears CBS is pressuring her to leave. Gee, wonder why?

Whatever shred of credibility existed among the network news organizations has now been utterly obliterated.

The Pet Goat versus going to sleep during a terrorist attack. Cindy Sheehan versus Pat Smith. And Valerie Plame versus the Benghazi Four.

Gee, no bias there.

Matthew Jaffe,  a reporter for ABC News and Univision who most recently covered the GOP primary, has married a member of Pres. Obama’s press team.

Jaffe married Katie Hogan, the president’s deputy press secretary, in Lake Geneva, WI over the weekend. Hogan and Jaffe are based in Chicago, which is home to the president’s re-election campaign headquarters.

ABC tells us Jaffe’s been reassigned to general news and is no longer covering politics. He had been focusing on the Latino vote in November’s election. It was amazing to witness the hearings on Capital Hill yesterday.  At times, the emotional testimony by grown men speaking about their fellow men that were killed that day should give Americans pause.

Prior to settling in to observe the hearings, other major channels were checked. It seems something as important as the lives of four Americans lost should have been major news. Sadly, it wasn’t. This is confirmed here:

HOW DID REST OF THE MEDIA COVER IMPORTANT BENGHAZI HEARINGS? TAKE A LOOK

To a citizen observer, it was apparent that Democrats on the committee were obviously trying to do damage control and protectionism for the Obama Administration; reading from what looked like “scripted” talking points, not even looking at the witnesses.  The spin factor was very apparent.

In response to this,  Eric Nordstrom, a former regional security officer in Libya, had an emotional start to his speech.

Nordstrom thanked the work of the committee “… to uncover what happened prior, during and after the attack” saying that it matters.

“It matters to me personally and it matters to my colleagues,” he said trailing off, appearing to choke up.

Nordstrom took a few seconds before continuing, “It matters to the American public for whom we serve.”

Nordstrom again cleared this throat and took a sip of water.

“And most importantly, it matters to the friends and family of Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods who were murdered on September 11, 2012,” Nordstrom said.

5. STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL FINGERED TERROR GROUP DAY AFTER ATTACK

One of the biggest points of contention in the Benghazi investigation has been: Why did the Obama administration initially blame the terrorist attack on a YouTube video when there was no apparent evidence to support that theory?

During the House Oversight Committee hearing on the Benghazi attack, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) read from an email sent by Beth Jones, the acting assistant secretary for Middle Eastern affairs at the State Department, to Benghazi whistleblower Gregory Hicks and other top administration officials. In it, she fingered Ansar al-Sharia, a radical Islamic terror group, as the perpetrator behind the attack after the Libyan government speculated that they might be ex-Gadhafi forces.

The email was sent the day after the attack on Sept. 12, 2012 — well before the Obama administration started pushing the YouTube video narrative.

“I spoke to the Libyan ambassador and emphasized the importance of Libyan leaders continuing to make strong statements,” the email read. “When he said his government expected that former Ghadafi regime elements carried out the attacks, I told him that the group that conducted the attacks, Ansar al-Sharia, is affiliated with Islamic terrorists.”

Gowdy said the email was previously unreleased, but not classified.

4. WHO IS LT. COL. GIBSON?

Benghazi whistleblower Gregory Hicks repeatedly brought up a man by the name of Lt. Col. Gibson. Other than the fact that he was a Special Operations Command (SOC) Africa commander, we don’t know much else about him.

But more importantly, we don’t know what else he knows about the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2012. On the night of the Benghazi attack, Gibson was “furious” when a stand down order was given, preventing Special Forces from intervening in Libya, Hicks testified.

Hicks said Gibson wanted to bring the Americans trapped in Benghazi home, but was unable to act. Does Gibson know who personally issued the stand down order? Does he know how far up the chain of command the order originated?

These are questions to keep in mind as the investigation proceeds.

3. BENGHAZI WITNESS TOLD NOT TO SPEAK WITH CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATOR ALONE

Hicks on Wednesday also revealed that he was told by Obama administration officials not to talk with Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) unsupervised.

A State Department lawyer accompanied the delegation and tried to be in every single meeting he was involved in, Hicks claimed.

Chaffetz, who traveled to Benghazi after the attack to investigate, also claimed back in October that the administration assigned a State Department attorney to follow him in his every “footstep” during his investigative trip.

2. WHISTLEBLOWER ‘EFFECTIVELY DEMOTED’ AFTER QUESTIONING BENGHAZI TALKING POINTS

Gregory Hicks told members of Congress that he has been “effectively demoted” from his position as deputy chief of mission shortly after he questioned United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice’s explanation that the Benghazi attack was the result of a spontaneous protest sparked by a YouTube video.

Hicks, the former deputy chief of mission under murdered U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, now holds the title of foreign affairs officer in the Office of Global Intergovernmental Affairs.

“In hindsight I think it began after I asked a question about Ambassador Rice’s statement on the TV shows,” Hicks said, after being asked what the “seminal” moment had been in all of his new professional criticism.

Though some the details are still fuzzy, someone issued a stand down order that prevented Special Forces from traveling to Benghazi to intervene after the attack.

Gregory Hicks, the deputy chief of mission for the U.S. in Libya and the highest ranking official in the country at the time of the Benghazi attacks, testified before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday that Lt. Col. Gibson was “furious” after receiving a stand down order on the night of Sept. 11, 2012.

Hicks quoted Gibson as saying, “This is the first time in my career that a diplomat has more balls than somebody in the military.”

But who exactly is Lt. Col. Gibson, and is he the key to figuring out who specifically gave the stand down order on that fateful night? That’s what a lot of people will likely want to find out in the coming days.

Here’s what we do know: Lt. Col. Gibson was a Special Operations Command (SOC) Africa commander when the U.S. compound was assaulted. As far as we can tell, he hasn’t spoken publicly about the Benghazi. Further, a basic Google search on the Lieutenant Colonel yields surprisingly little information.

Hicks testified on Wednesday that he believes the stand down order came from either AFRICOMM or SOCAFRICA. However, he did not have any specific details on who ordered that the command be executed.

When the command eventually came down and Special Forces were told they were not authorized to board a plane to Benghazi, Hicks said Gibson and other officials were “furious.” This was after it was determined that a second team needed to be sent from Tripoli to secure the airport for the withdrawal of personnel in Benghazi.

“People in Benghazi had been fighting all night. They were tired. They were exhausted. We wanted to make sure the airport was secure for their withdrawal. As he and his three personnel were getting in the cars, he stopped, they called them off. He said that he had not been authorized to go,” Hicks testified.

“Lt. Col. Gibson was furious. I had told him to go bring our people home. That’s what he wanted to do,” he added.

A year to the day after kicking off his re-election campaign at Ohio State University, President Barack Obama returned to the college campus and told graduates that only through vigorous participation in their “democracy” can they right an ill-functioning government and break through relentless cynicism about the nation’s future.

“I dare you, Class of 2013, to do better. I dare you to do better,” Obama said.

In a sunbaked stadium filled with more than 57,000 students, friends and relatives, Obama lamented an American political system that gets consumed by “small things” and works for the benefit of society’s elite. He called graduates to duty to “accomplish great things,” like rebuilding a still-feeble economy and fighting poverty and climate change.

“Only you can ultimately break that cycle. Only you can make sure the democracy you inherit is as good as we know it can be,” the president told more than 10,000 cap-and-gown-clad graduates. “But it requires your dedicated, informed and engaged citizenship.”

Obama also urged the students to “reject these voices” that warn of the evils of government, saying:

Still, you’ll hear voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s the root of all our problems, even as they do their best to gum up the works; or that tyranny always lurks just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, creative, unique experiment in self-rule is just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.

We have never been a people who place all our faith in government to solve our problems, nor do we want it to. But we don’t think the government is the source of all our problems, either. Because we understand that this democracy is ours. As citizens, we understand that America is not about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but absolutely necessary work of self-government.

It is the man, not the gun, that is capable of committing acts of evil.

That was the message Glenn Beck conveyed throughout his highly anticipated keynote speech at the 2013 NRA Convention on Saturday. He made that case using storied antique firearms as he taught America’s captivating history through guns. Make no mistake, the history behind some of the guns Beck handled on stage will blow you away.

One story about a particular shotgun, wielded by a “naked hippie” shooting birds decades ago, seemed to have the most impact. Beck explained that after receiving a early morning call about the naked hippie shooting birds out of season, police in California arrested the said hippie and confiscated his WWII-era shotgun.

That man turned out to be the notoriously evil serial killer Charles Manson. After his gun was taken away, he then turned to a knife to commit at least nine grisly murders with his cult group.

“Charlie Manson had his gun taken away. Charlie Manson didn’t use a gun. He killed with a knife,” Beck told a crowd of thousands at the George R. Brown Convention Center Saturday. He explained that it is a person’s intent, not what tool he or she decides to use to commit evil.

“We have to admit two things,” he added. “That weapons will always find their way into the hands of bad people, always…but we must declare this: that guns must remain in the hands of good people.”

He told several other stories about antique firearms, including one about a New York police officer whose revolver was found in the rubble following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. While victims were running away from the horrific scene, heroes like Walter Weaver, a member of the NYPD and a lifetime NRA member, were running in.

After the towers fell and the nation mourned, Beck said, responders sifted through the rubble, and only found a small reminder of Walter Weaver. Beck then held up the revolver for the audience to see, calling it “a silent token of liberty.”

But Beck first brought out an antique rifle that was used by the U.S. the “first time we fought Muslim extremists” — the Barbary pirates. Beck said Thomas Jefferson warned that Muslim extremists are not going to go anywhere. The gun was later picked up and used by a Muslim extremist.

“So what is this gun, good or evil? It is nothing! A gun is only a reflection of the people that use it,” he declared.

Beck didn’t discriminate politically as he blasted Democrats and Republicans for promoting and implementing a progressive ideology “antithetical” to our Constitutional Republic. Unfortunately, he explained, the problem is everywhere — in media, churches and educational systems across the country.

He jabbed a number of celebrities and politicians for anti-gun hypocrisy, including Michael Moore, Jim Carrey and, of course, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Beck said there is a “tough journey ahead” for gun owners in America, proclaiming that “this weekend, I believe, is one of the most important moments in American history and the defining moment for the NRA.”

After saying big government progressives actually believe they can make better decisions for Americans than they can make themselves. “I will not comply!” Beck said emphatically, drawing the first of several standing ovations during his speech.

But the four things Americans need to know for the battle ahead, according to Beck, are: “What we fight, who we fight, why we fight, and how we fight.”

‘Guns Save Lives’

Beck also told some of the many, many stories TheBlaze has covered about good, law-abiding people with firearms defending themselves, families and property.

On April 4, just one month ago in Portland, Oregon, a woman was attacked around 10 p.m. after she had gotten out of her car, Beck told a captivated audience. A man approached her from behind and dragged her backwards by her ponytail. We know what would have happened next but this woman had a gun. She pointed it at the man and “he ran like a little girl,” he said.

He went on to tell the story of a elderly woman in Youngstown, Ohio, who was strapped to an oxygen tank at her home when someone broke the glass on her front door and entered. She retrieved her revolver and warned him to leave, and when he didn’t, she shot him and held him for police.

Additionally, in Texas, attackers sexually assaulted a mother and her daughter, Beck said. The woman’s son is also tied up but manages to get free and grabs a handgun, sending the two men fleeing from the home.

“It happens every day. Every day,” Beck said, “and it seems to me that we are the only major media outlet in the country with the guts to report it. Why? Because the truth has no agenda…guns save lives!”

He went on: “They’re counting on you to be quiet. For our soldiers to come home, to sit down and to be quiet. Not to have the courage like so many soldiers to come home and tell the truth like Marcus Luttrell and Chris Kyle—or their sweet dear wives who pick up the torch and carry on.”

‘It Is the Man, Not the Gun’

Beck eventually circled back to the theme of his keynote speech.

“It is not the gun or the knife, or as Cain discovered with Abel, a rock,” he said, “but the cold heart filled with error, darkness and coldness. That is the problem.”

He urged his audience to build others up, to teach them, to heal them. He said liberty-loving Americans will work side-by-side together for freedom; white, black, Hispanic or native-American. “It doesn’t matter,” he noted.

“We will work together as Americans not only to preserve our rights, but the rights of our children to be safe, our wives and daughters to not be held at knife or gunpoint by a rapist and our most precious and vulnerable little ones to have the right to survive a simple walk down a city street or God forbid, survive a day public education,” Beck said to thunderous applause.

Beck concluded his powerful keynote speech by quoting Winston Churchill, saying “we will fight your lies and we will counter them with love, peace and equal justice for all mankind.”

As Beck’s final words rang out, the crowd went wild as a noisy fusion of cheers and applause tore through the auditorium. The crowd stayed on their feet for a considerable amount of time, wrapping up a very successful second day of the convention.

After his speech, Beck had one more surprise. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre made his way to the stage and presented him with a framed signature of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.

THESE ARE THE FACES OF THE NRA CONVENTION THAT THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA WON’T SHOW YOU

Ethan Sanders, 19, told TheBlaze that the media portrays practically every gun owner as a “criminal lunatic — someone who is going to go out and kill someone.”

“Owning a firearm isn’t about shooting a deer, it’s not about any of that,” he said. “It’s about defending yourself against other people, specifically a tyrannical government. And they try to paint all of us as some sort of crazy people who just want to start shooting…you never want to shoot somebody, you never want to kill another person.”

And Sanders had a very short, simple message for the media: “Stop lying about us.”

Zeke Emejulu, a black conservative from Houston, told TheBlaze he’s tired of gun owners being portrayed as “a bunch of idiots.”

He said gun owners are smart and are unfairly demonized because the anti-gun crowd seems to think that guns, inanimate objects, “have lives of their own and go on random shooting sprees.”

“What I would say to the mainstream media is that they ought to live up to their journalistic standards, which presumably includes doing actual research and laying out facts rather than opinion,” Emejulu said. “Get to know what you are reporting about, in-depth, not just enough for a three minute segment…Stop injecting your own preconceived notions of what you think about guns.”

Retired U.S. Marine John Tullous, of Wilmington, N.C., took a three-day road trip to make it to the NRA Convention in Houston, but he says it was worth it. Tullous agreed to talk to TheBlaze because he knew he would not be taken out of context or made to look crazy.

He recalled going to the NRA Leadership Forum — which featured speakers like Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum — and seeing a gaggle of media members huddling together “scared to death.”

“They wouldn’t look you in the eye, they had no integrity. They were absolutely terrible,” Tullous said. “I can’t stand them.”

If he could tell the media one thing, he said he would ask so-called journalists to show “courage” and stand up for the U.S. Constitution.

Tullous, a true American hero, spent 22 years in the Marine Corps. He served a tour in Vietnam, South America and was involved in “quite a few shooting conflicts” throughout his military career.

Houston resident Mitch Duffy was accompanied by his 11-year-old son, Nolan, at the NRA Convention on Saturday. He said it’s important to teach kids at an early age to respect firearms, but emphasize that they don’t have to be afraid of them.

Nolan said his favorite part of the NRA event was spending time with his dad and checking out all the “awesome” antique and modern guns that filled the massive convention floor.

And again, the topic of the mainstream media’s coverage of gun owners came up. Duffy said the media doesn’t understand who gun owners really are, adding that the Second Amendment should be celebrated and not demonized.

HOUSTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin says recent mass shootings have prompted leaders in Washington, D.C., to exploit tragedy in order to limit the freedoms of law-abiding people.

Palin spoke at the National Rifle Association’s convention Friday afternoon in Houston.

She said while she and others were saddened and angered by December’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, the emotions that have resulted from it won’t make anybody safer and won’t “protect the good guys’ rights.”

The former governor of Alaska asked those at the convention to “keep the faith” and “stand up and fight for our freedoms.”

Palin also went after New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, mocking him for his nanny-state policies.

“Now I see that the mayor of New York now wants to ban public displays of legal tobacco products,” she said, referring to the mayor’s push to force stores to essentially hide tobacco products. The former Alaska governor then pulled out a tin of what looked like chewing tobacco and said, “Don’t make me do it.”
