I agree with much of your thinking, However I submit #13 would be better solved by moving healthcare back toward a free market. As the debate started, I remembered an address in college by a U.K. dignitary warning us to stay away from socialized medicine, and got involved.

Why do prices rise, usually because there is more demand than supply, right? So, I searched "supply of doctors" and sure enough articles show, who determines the supply of doctors? None other than "Congress." A subcommittee takes the advice of the AMA (big donors with a monopoly like agenda) and limits funding of residencies required for a medical license. Then, by protecting their turf, there are a limited number of professors for medical schools to hire, causing the cost of medical school to continue rising.

If you or a reader would like to pursue this further one could start with

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2005-03-02-doctor-shortage_x.htm

which shows about 1982 AMA/Congress started underestimating the number of doctors that would be needed. Funny, that's about when my premiums started to rise more and more each year.

It seems obvious to this long term thinker, that the problem began when doctors, so respected years ago, were presented with the opportunity to be paid by government (Medicare and Medicaid). The progressive movement even then had apparently weakened their value system to the point that instead of looking to private charity to help those who could not pay, they thought short term and with unprincipled greed, took the bait "Congress" dangled. Now that path has slowly boiled us like a frog.

Our founders warned our system will only work with a foundation of religious values, And, only a return to such will cause us to make wiser long term decisions with less need of costly regulation.

After the debacle of the collapse -- it having been orchestrated by thieves in congress who gradually changed the law so that citizens could be swindled by congress & friends -- I may never vote republican again and I certainly never would vote democrat.

Independent is it, most likely voting for libertarians, though they need just as much scrutiny as anyone else.

When candidate selectors in US voting districts stop sending candidates to Washington in order to feather their own nests, we'll all be better off, but that's unlikely, so it'll be a tooth-and-nail fight with every new election, ESPECIALLY if pigs' snouts continue to be blocked from the D.C. trough.

Suggestion for some new rules...

New age of reason in the USA

One-term-only for all federal candidates. No repeats.
All candidates for federal office must pass a rigorous test on the Constitution, administered and graded by nonpartisan neutral voters from local districts (not politicians, officeholders, teachers, or professors).

Reduction of federal bureaucracy, across the board, 85%.
Pay reduced to minimum wage, no benefits.

Service in Senate and House is for the honor of being elected, no salary or benefits.
Anyone taking bribes is a traitor and should be treated as such.
No lobbyists; this is treason (pay for play) and should be treated as such.
Swindles of federal reserve, treasury, banks, savings & loans and other financial institutions, Wall Street, Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac and others is treason, and should be treated as such.

Federal Reserve system outlawed. Return to the original Constitution regarding coining of money.

Income tax is over. Federal withholding from paychecks of anyone who works is outlawed.

Flat sales tax instituted (not VAT hidden rate, but voter-approved flat rate that all can clearly see) on all items purchased, everyone pays at the same rate, whether a Rockerfeller or a drug lord. No individuals excluded, no items excluded. The amount of tax paid can be controlled by individuals; to pay less, buy fewer fripperies.

Election campaigns: 4 weeks only, no television or radio ads.

Congratulations on an excellent article. We should not forget that in order to get the economy back on track, the unemployment rate has to be reduced with real jobs, not government or social services. People need to work and have the right to have a business, make a profit, offer benefits and bonuses to their employees and be competitive in a free market. Employers need to offer a healthcare benefit worthy of their loyal employees, not something the government crams down their throat just because it's cheaper--this is the downfall of medicine in America. Keep the educational standards high for our students. I fear that the very bright now graduating and seeking jobs are going to end up in government or social service jobs funded by the Democrats that don't come close to their expertise and education It's this aspect of a sound education that is needed to conquer the challenges ahead in America.

Response by Romanticpoet:

Until America fights the education system as well to rid it of Liberal Indoctrination, we will see the YOUTH of America marching in line with the Far Left ideology. The likes of Bill Ayers, Ward Churchill, etc. just indoctrinate our children to want to be "like Obama".
Go to this website: http://www.learningtogive.org/ and just look around. It will shock you!
Their philosophy: Learning to Give, the curriculum division of The League, is the world's leading developer of lessons and resources that teach giving and volunteerism, civic engagement, and character through service learning.
WHO does that sound like to you? Will THIS mirror any educational plans submitted by Obama and Arne Duncan?
Parents should be aware that Sen. Barbara Boxer is trying to get a treaty ratified that allows the UNITED NATIONS to tell us how to raise our children too. Called the "Convention of the Children."
As they say, if you control the YOUTH, you control everything.
