Communist Party USA and Union Leaders Claim ‘Republicans controlling Congress’

Just days before POTUS Obama plans to announce his “new jobs package” on primetime tv next week, the AFL-CIO and its allies announced they “will spend weeks organizing an ‘America Wants to Work’ campaign to focus on what they see as the nation’s real crisis: jobs,”according to John Wojcik, the labor editor for People’s World, the official Communist Party USA publication.

“Unions want a dramatic plan that can actually decrease the unemployment rate, and they believe a substantial jobs package – even one that comes with a high price tag – can create a public groundswell that Republicans controlling Congress can’t ignore,” Wojcik writes.

Nevermind that two branches of the U.S. government are controlled by Democrats–not Republicans, who only hold the majority in the House of Representatives.

Facts aside, union leaders Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, Gerald McEntee, president of AFSCME, and Barbara Easterling, president of the Alliance for Retired Americans, are all blaming the jobs’ crisis on Republicans.

Wojcik reported last month:

“Republican elected leaders are acting like dictators,” declared AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “They’re willing to throw working families and the working poor overboard just to preserve the tax cuts for billionaires and hedge fund managers. With over 14 million unemployed we need Congress to focus on job creation.”

Unions, in the aftermath of the deficit reduction deal struck this week on Capitol Hill, are declaring that the nation’s real crisis is not a debt crisis but an unemployment crisis. Leaders of almost every union in the country are charging that the compromise will make unemployment worse and that the spending cuts could, in fact, spiral the country into an even deeper recession.

“Main Street,” declared AFSCME President Gerald McEntee, “has had enough. Republican leaders need to get their priorities straight. They appear ready to throw the economy back into a tailspin all to save face with their corporate donors.” …

Barbara Easterling, president of the Alliance for Retired Americans, reacted to the deficit reduction deal by saying that it was “outrageous” that Republicans “would insist on a deal that slashes Medicare, one of America’s greatest success stories, helping generations of seniors afford to see a doctor and fill a prescription.”

As a frequent White House visitor, Trumka is well aware of what Obama’s retread message will be next week. Expect lots of talk about investing in America’s infrastructure.

The Obama administration, by the way, has more than a passing acquaintance with Wojcik. In November 2010, Obama’s Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, was present when the International Labor Communications Association, or ILCA, a national coalition of labor organizers affiliated with the AFL-CIO, bestowed its media award to Wojcik.
