Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Leader Calls Jihad on Israel Every Muslims Duty

Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammad Badi (AP photo)

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood Chairman Muhammad Badi — also known as the group’s “Supreme Guide” – said last week that waging jihad against Israel is an imperative for every Muslim. Middle East watcher Raymond Ibrahim who scours the Arabic press and translates it to English for Western eyes posted this revelation on his blog:

According to last Thursday’s edition of Al Wafd, during his weekly sermon, “Muhammad Badi, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide, confirmed the necessity for every Muslim to strive to save al-Quds [Jerusalem] from the hands of the rapists [Israelis] and to cleanse Palestine from the clutches of the occupation, deeming this an individual duty for all Muslims.”

More specifically, he “called on all Muslims to wage jihad with their money and their selves to free al-Quds”—the same exact language one finds in al-Qaeda’s tracts.

Earlier this year, the Middle East Media Research Institute translated a sermon of Badi’s in which he called for gradually establishing a global Islamic Caliphate leading to “mastership of the world.”

Another sermon of Badi’s which raised eyebrows in the U.S. was delivered in October 2010, when he said the U.S. was doomed to collapse due to its immorality. MEMRI translated the sermon from the Muslim Brotherhood’s website, titled “How Islam Confronts the Oppression and Tyranny [against the Muslims],” and reported:

Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammad Badi’ accused the Arab and Muslim regimes of employing tyranny against their peoples, of avoiding confrontation with the Muslims’ real enemies – the Zionist entity and the U.S. – and of disregarding Allah’s commandment to wage jihad against the infidels.

About the U.S., he said that it is immoral and therefore doomed to collapse, and that it is “experiencing the beginning of its end and is heading towards its demise.”

Badi said:

“Today the Muslims desperately need a mentality of honor and means of power [that will enable them] to confront global Zionism. [This movement] knows nothing but the language of force, so [the Muslims] must meet iron with iron, and winds with [even more powerful] storms. They crucially need to understand that the improvement and change that the [Muslim] nation seeks can only be attained through jihad and sacrifice and by raising a jihadi generation that pursues death just as the enemies pursue life.”

Then, Badi also stated that he believed Mubarak’s government had become weak because it had not subscribed to “Allah’s commandment to wage jihad…so that Allah’s word will reign supreme” over all non-Muslims.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton travels to Egypt next week to meet Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi. Just last month she said the Obama administration was pleased so far with commitments made by Morsi.

Now, she will have the opportunity to assess President Morsi’s leadership up close and assess his commitment to the treaty with Israel and to reigning in terrorist activity in the Sinai Peninsula.  This latest jihad-promoting call from the supreme leader of Morsi’s movement can only undermine the more optimistic assessments coming from Washington.

Obama Administration Reportedly Invites Egypts President Mohammed Morsi to Visit the United States in September

(Photo: AP)

The Obama administration has invited Egypt’s new Islamist leader Mohammed Mursi to visit the United States in September, according to an Egyptian official, clearly reflecting Washington’s changing view of Islamists and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Jerusalem Post explains [all emphasis added]:

Washington, long wary of Islamists and [a former] ally of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, shifted policy last year to open formal contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood, the group behind Mursi’s win…

Mursi’s success at the polls mirrors the rising influence of Islamists in countries across the Middle East and North Africa in the wake of revolts and protests against autocratic rulers who have led the region for decades.

The invitation was reportedly extended after the Islamist leader met U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns in Cairo.

The Jerusalem Post continues:

Burns… pledged US support for Egypt‘s battered economy and said he welcomed Mursi’s promise to uphold international treaties, which include a peace deal with Israel.

“We have taken careful note and appreciated President Mursi‘s public statements about a commitment to international obligations and we certainly attach great importance to Egypt’s continuing role as a force for peace,” Burns said.

Analysts say that one way the United States could influence the direction of policy in Egypt, a nation at the heart of Washington’s regional policy since a peace treaty was signed with Israel in 1979, would be through economic support.

Washington provides $1.3 billion a year in military aid as well as other assistance and could help mobilize other donors, lenders and investors. Those could prove vital as Egypt tries to stave off a balance of payments and budget crisis.

“The United States is firmly committed to doing everything that we can to support Egypt’s economic revival. We understand the challenges that lie ahead and also the president does,” Burns told reporters after his two-hour meeting with Mursi.
Burns said he also discussed a $3.2 billion dollar loan package through the IMF to address Egypt’s “concerns and needs.”

Though Burns sounds optimistic that the ruling party will uphold Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel, high-ranking members of the Muslim Brotherhood (and Mursi himself) have made it clear that the treaty is far from guaranteed.

Will Obama and the Progressives “Lose” in Egypt? Surprise, Surprise – Russia Moves on Egypt.

From the Moscow Times

Russia is well-positioned for establishing good relations with the new Morsi regime. The Kremlin has successful experience working with Hamas, a movement that is basically the Palestinian version of the Muslim Brotherhood. I have met with many Muslim Brotherhood leaders, and none of them has negative personal attitudes toward Russia…

There are a number of reasons why it is important for Russia to develop relations with the new Arab elites.First, it presents an opportunity to strengthen Moscow’s influence in the region amid the diminished economic strength of Russia following the Soviet collapse.

Second, it would be advantageous for Russia to establish a dialogue with moderate Islamist forces, primarily among Muslim Brotherhood members. Such experience would also help stabilize the situation in the North Caucasus. ..

To help promote Russia’s interests in the Middle East, the Moscow-Istanbul-Rome Initiative, or MIR Initiative, held a conference in Rome in late May called “Bridging the New Middle East.” The Muslim Brotherhood leadership and its political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, participated. They stressed that Russia could best strengthen its position in the Middle East by focusing on relations with the new Egypt.

Russia first strengthened its position in the Arab world by means of its strong relationship with former Egyptian President Gamal Nasser. Today, with the emergence of Morsi, Russia has an opportunity to return to the big game in the Middle East.

Platitudes and naivete: Obama’s Cairo speech

In the interest of such sharing, no doubt, Obama made sure that Muslim Brotherhood members attended this speech. Yet the Brotherhood is dedicated, in its own words, to “eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and ‘sabotaging’ its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.” Doesn’t that count as an attempt to elevate “one nation or group of people over another”?
