U.N. Rights Council Backs ‘Censorship’ Watchdog, Elevates U.S. Foes

Yet ANOTHER reason to rid the United States of the United Nations on our soil.

Is this another Obama blunder?  Or is Obama allowing the United Nations to turn into a Sharia Court?

The United States and its allies suffered a series of setbacks at the United Nations on Friday as the Human Rights Council flirted with media censorship and was poised to elevate an anti-American politician and a Cuban to key positions.

Concerns about censorship were raised after the 56-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), which has tremendous sway in the United Nations, successfully pushed through a resolution that creates a watchdog to monitor how religion is portrayed in the media

The OIC says it will promote religious tolerance by ensuring that religion is not defamed, as it claims occurred when Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad provoked Muslim riots. But the United States and the European Union members on the council opposed the resolution, fearing that it will censor the press and muzzle freedom of expression.

The resolution now opens the way for the Human Rights Council to select a special investigator on religious freedom to “work closely with mass media organizations to ensure that they create and promote an atmosphere of respect and tolerance for religious and cultural diversity.”

Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva-based non-profit U.N. Watch, warned that what the OIC is really trying to do is “turn an international shield for religious freedom into a sword for religious-motivated state censorship.”

Another blow to U.S. interests Friday in Geneva was the appointment of former U.N. General Assembly president and ex-Sandinista Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann as a member of the council’s 18-member Advisory Committee

D’Escoto is a virulently anti-American politician, who champions the causes of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez and Chavez ally Evo Morales, president of Bolivia. During his tenure as General Assembly president, D’Escoto’s senior advisers included Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi supporter Ramsey Clark and Hamas-friendly U.N. human rights investigator Richard Falk.

D’Escoto last year called Fidel Castro a world hero.

On top of that, a Cuban is expected to be selected Monday to be vice chair of the Human Rights Council.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, decried the developments in Geneva in a statement on Friday.

“‘Shameful’ is the only word that can describe any organization that would promote Cuba as a defender of human rights, while naming an anti-American, anti-Israel former Sandinista mouthpiece as an advisor,” she said.

The developments raised new questions about the Obama administration’s decision last year to join the Human Rights Council — ending President George W. Bush’s policy of boycotting it because its members include China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and other countries with abysmal rights records.

Obama names U.S. envoy to Islamic Conference

February 14, 2010

by Scott Wilson

President Obama announced Saturday the appointment of Rashad Hussain, a White House lawyer, to be his special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

Obama made the announcement in a video conference to the U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar. In his message, Obama called Hussain “an accomplished lawyer and a close and trusted member of my White House staff,” who would strengthen his policy of outreach to the world’s Muslims.

Obama has made repairing U.S. relations with the Islamic world an important element of his foreign policy, an effort highlighted by his call for a “new beginning” in a speech in Cairo last June.

In the statement Saturday, Obama said Hussain has “played a key role in developing the partnerships I called for in Cairo,” and would continue to do so in his new position. Obama noted that Hussain is a Hafiz of the Koran, someone who has memorized the holy Islamic text.

The Organization of the Islamic Conference comprises 57 nations with a goal of promoting Muslim unity.

As a deputy associate counsel to Obama, Hussain has worked on national security, new media, and science and technology issues, according to a White House statement. He previously worked as a trial attorney for the Justice Department and as a legislative assistant on the House Judiciary Committee.

Sharia law conference coming to Chicago Area

June 16, 2010

The Islamic influence in this country is becoming stronger, and Illinois is not immune to it.  Tea Party groups and members should all be aware that the Hizb-ut Taherir America (HTA) has scheduled the 2010 “Khilafah Conference” for July 11th (1 PM to 6PM) at the Chicago Marriott in Oak Brook.  This is a conference similar to one which was held last year in Oak Lawn, where several hundred American Patriots protested.

The conference title for this years conference is “Emerging World Order:  How the Khilafah will shape the world”.

Sharia law is often contradictory and in conflict with the law of the land in America, our Constitution.  Yet, Obama’s pick as legal State Department Advisor, Harold Koh, sees no wrong in imposing Sharia law in this country.

Conservatives, and specifically those within the Tea Party movement see the continued expansion of Sharia law, and Obama’s tacit approval of it, as a threat to the American way of life.  This writer has already viewed many e-mails from tea party groups and individuals regarding the planning of another protest at this years conference in Oak Brook.

Liberation Theology priest heads the UN

On June 4, 2008, Fr. Miguel d’Escoto, a partisan of Liberation Theology, was chosen as President of the United Nations Assembly. D’Escoto is a former Foreign Minister of the Daniel Ortega government in Nicaragua from 1979-1990.

Ortega and d’Escoto took power through guerilla warfare against the government that evolved into a civil war. They followed an openly Marxist orientation. In 1990 Ortega was defeated in the elections. In 2006 he return to power thanks in great part to the support of the Cardinal of Managua, Obando y Bravo, who presented Ortega as a moderate Catholic. As soon as Ortega was elected, however, he again embraced the same Communist creed. Instead of objecting to that stance, the Cardinal accepted a place in the government as President of the Peace and Reconciliation Council.

The name of Fr. Miguel d’Escoto was proposed to the UN by Daniel Ortega and accepted by acclamation of the 192 members of the Assembly. His inauguration for the one-year-term took place on September 16, 2008.

Enthralled with Fidel Castro’s Communist Paradise

Even as communism was failing in Europe, journalists continued to lavish positive press on Cuba’s communist regime. Dictator Fidel Castro was painted as a romantic revolutionary, as he had been for more than half a century. Back on January 18, 1959, New York Times reporter Herbert L. Matthews exulted in Castro’s seizure of Cuba : “Everybody here seems agreed that Dr. Castro is one of the most extraordinary figures ever to appear on the Latin-American scene. He is by any standards a man of destiny.”

In 1997, CNN became the first U.S.-based news organization with a full-time news bureau in Cuba since the communist takeover, but the U.S. network became just another cog in Castro’s propaganda machine. A Media Research Center study of CNN’s coverage of Cuba  during the first five years after their bureau opened found that communist officials made up 77 percent of CNN’s talking heads, versus 11 percent for the Catholic Church and 12 percent for dissidents. Of the network’s 212 Cuba stories, just seven focused on dissidents.

“Castro has delivered the most to those who had the least….Education was once available to the rich and the well-connected. It is now free to all….Medical care was once for the privileged few. Today it is available to every Cuban and it is free….Health and education are the revolution’s great success stories.”
— Peter Jennings reporting from Havana on ABC’s World News Tonight, April 3, 1989

“He [Fidel Castro] said he wanted to make a better life for Cuba’s poor. Many who lived through the revolution say he succeeded….Today even the poorest Cubans have food to eat, their children are educated and even critics of the regime say Cubans have better health care than most Latin Americans.”
— Reporter Paula Zahn on Good Morning America, April 3, 1989.

“Considered one of the most charismatic leaders of the 20th century….[Fidel] Castro traveled the country cultivating his image, and his revolution delivered. Campaigns stamped out illiteracy and even today, Cuba has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world.”
— Katie Couric reporting on NBC’s Today, February 13, 1992.

Barbara Lee in Cuba: A look back

By Josh Richman
Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 at 2:28.

Rep. Barbara Lee’s office sent over a few photos of her meeting with President Raul Castro during this past week’s congressional delegation trip to Cuba:

=====================================

In February 2005 Rangel proclaimed that it was inappropriate for Americans to characterize groups like Hezbollah as “Islamic terrorists.” “To call it Islamic terror is discriminating, it’s bigoted, it is not the right thing to say,” Rangel stated.

Rangel is an avowed admirer of the former Cuban President Fidel Castro. In April 1993, the congressman introduced legislation to repeal the Cuban Democracy Act of 1992, which ended U.S. assistance to the Castro government, and to lift the American embargo against Cuba. When Castro toured Harlem in October of 1995, Rangel greeted him with a bear hug at an event in a local church, where the congressman joined in a prolonged standing ovation for the visiting dictator.
